Assignment 2:
Analysis of Art of Seeing
Group 1:
We really like how they used the Sykes building to represent shape. Moving building to building the children's museum downtown has a wide array of colors bouncing off the walls. With shades of colors bouncing off the bridge it made the bridge appear to be bigger than normal and gave it emphasis in the image.
Group 2:
As the swimmer dives into the water, it demonstrates movement in the literal meaning. Who said a finger was as big as a building? Well with them showing us that using the camera they could make there finger proportionally the same size. We really enjoyed seeing all of the different locations and how they brought them together to complete the project.
Group 3:
From paintings hanging in the hallway to wondering around campus, group 3 struggled a little bit with the topics but in the end pulled it together with some awesome pictures.
Group 4:
DUCK FACE..... Long out of style but we still love you Ben! All of their groups pictures flow perfectly and fit all the descriptions of each element they are trying to describe.
Group 5:
We love how they use variety and took a picture of the skyline. They were really creative with their pictures and made sure everything was on spot. For proportion it was really cool to see her and how she was proportionally different to the building.
Group 6:
Choosing all the different nations flags to represent color was a really interesting choice. We really like that through all the colors on the flags we are all united under one art element. FOR THE WIN! Thats the emphasis brought to the room by the giant spartan statue in the main entrance of Martinez.
Group 7:
COLORS, COLORS, COLORS. All of this groups pictures are bright and vibrant and that makes them 10000000 times more interesting to read and study. We really like how the incorporate many different things around campus to bring the whole project together.

Assignment 4:
Color Assignment
Black
#000000
Black
#000000
The color I chose for this assignment is Black, which is my favorite color. Pretty much all of my clothes, shoes, and everything I wear is black. Same with my bedspread and everything in my room. My parents think it is a sad and depressing color, but I like it. I think it is simple and even though most people say it's not a color, it is a shadow.. it's my favorite!
Assignment 5:
Tim Roda
5 Questions:
1. Why does he use children in most of his photographs?
2. Are these children healthy?
3. Why does he use black and white more than color?
4. Is he trying to send a message to our society on how young children are forced to grow up?
5. Is he expressing his own childhood?
5 Observations:
1. He uses children in most of his photographs doing odd jobs that children aren't usually doing.
2. Most of the children look sickly in his pictures.
3. In one picture two young boys look like they are doing something with drugs.
4. His photographs evoke a depressing and sad emotion when you look through them.
5. These photographs are all dark which makes me think there is a story behind each.
After talking to Tim Roda on Skype about his artwork and photographs I have a lot more respect for him and his art. There are meanings behind each of his photos and stories that are deep about his childhood. He was first focused on making sense of his childhood, whether it was the chicken heads in his sisters bathroom or slaughtering a cow each month with his family. Now he uses his past a subject and theme for his artwork to progress through his pictures. I think his childhood stories are very interesting and amusing which make his artwork very intriguing. I enjoyed talking to him on Skype and I am looking forward to seeing more of his future pieces.
Assignment 6:
Image Caption
1. There are 6 aisles of items to purchase, such as food, drinks, and medicine. There is a couple on the side shopping. There are large quantities of a variety of these items. This photograph was probably taken in a store that sells these items in bulk, such as BJs or Costco.
2. This photo has a stressful tone to it, because there are so many brands and options to choose from and because of the large number of items on display with so many vibrant colors, all trying to stand out so people will take notice and purchase them. It can be described as “organized chaos,” because everything is neatly lined up on each shelf but there are so many different options.
3. The store was probably just stocked before the photo was taken because all the shelves are full and all of the items for sale are neatly lined up. After the photo, the shelves will probably start getting gaps when people start purchasing items.
4. The photo suggests that people like convenience, because this store doesn’t just sell drinks, it also sells food, detergent, medicine, and so on. They can clearly see all their options neatly lined up on each shelf. There are also several different brands of each item indicating that people like choices and that they have preferences to which brand they purchase otherwise there wouldn’t be so many brands.

Assignment 8: Jason Hackett
Assignment 8: Jason Hackett
After the Skype call with Jason Hackett I definitely liked
his artwork a lot more. To know what he does this purely for a hobby and not an
income is inspiring. Many people these days in society are obsessed with making
tons of money and lose sight on the things they love. The fact that he puts
this much time, effort, and passion into these pieces knowing he might not see
a profit is motivating. It motivates me to find a hobby I am interested in, stick
with it, and excel like Jason Hackett does with his sculpture pieces. Another
thing I liked was the story behind each of his projects we discussed during the
call. The fact that the plates were a narrative piece showing a story of a man
loving a woman who is in love with someone else is a work of art with such
meaning and symbolizes so much. I liked this artist a lot and hope to see more
from him in the future, very intriguing and very inspiring!
Assignment 9: Claire Sherwood
5 Questions:
1. Is that icing on top of what looks like pavement cakes?
2. What does the icing represent?
3. Is there a reason icing is used so often in your pieces?
4. Why aren't any of your children used in your artwork?
5. How does the icing stay on the objects?
5 Observations:
1. Up In Blue is my favorite object, it looks like cookies.
2. Up In Blue Detail shows the actual patterns of the icing and how many different variations there are.
3. It's The Winding That Loosens: Detail looks like a maze.
4. However, the Winding That Loosens looked like a banana peal.
5. Suspended looks like an ice cream cone, is there a food pattern going on?
Claire was definitely my favorite artist we have Skyped so far, mainly because her artwork appealed to me more since it was "girly-er." Her frosting pieces and lace were my favorite, seemed like artwork I would make if I was a sculptor. I respect her a lot more since listening to her because of her feminist views. I like how she had a food pattern too, like the ice cream, cookies, etc. I liked how she kind of challenged the Roman Catholic view, in example her video with her mouth opening and closing.
Assignment 10: Perspective Project Comments
- Benjamin Dreiker & Spencer Haberman: good image, clear concept, maybe change the background to indicate that he’s a baker, could add more details (have him holding a cooking utensil, wear an apron with stains, wear an oven mitt, etc.), can’t tell that it’s a cake (add details to indicate so if necessary)
- Michael Ciluffo, Dominic Gallone & Connor Zazzo: cool concept, maybe show more of the goal to indicate that it’s the goalie, nice details building the tension
- Jeslin Ritz & Berkley Whaley: interesting concept but maybe show more of the bottom of the trunk to get an idea that the person’s being enclosed in it, good background setting but maybe use a male figure closing the trunk, nice angle
- Megan Kiley & Stevie Ruzich: good idea combining the pictures, maybe use a different name for the contact to make it more realistic, good idea using the text to set the scene, the peephole in the middle is kind of confusing, might be stronger if the boy was facing the “peephole,” maybe use arrows or something to show the progression
- Andrea Diaz & Peter Insdorf: good idea but confusing angle
- Frank Calo & Tara O’Connor: nice variety of perspectives, maybe space the sides more to indicate that the top and bottom are related, interesting set of photos put together
- Erin Brockman & Alex Medvedev: clear idea, great image details (hands, books, pen, drink, backpack, setting, blackboard, people, etc.), good camera angle
- Micaela Figueroa & Jennifer McElroy: nice idea, maybe put people in the seats or darken it more, maybe show a little more in the second image, third image is the most visually intriguing, put both images together for the second project maybe, interesting concept for the second project, maybe crop the white out a bit and show more of the metal machine for the second project
- Kofi French Cudjoe & Elizabeth Lynch: very interesting image, a little confusing conceptually
